What supports are available to me and my children during the strike?
In response to the impending October 6, 2025 labour action by the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA), the Alberta government announced two new initiatives to support students and parents.
Parent Payment
To help ease the extra costs families may face while children are home during labour action, the Alberta government is introducing a parent payment program. This support will be available to parents and guardians of students aged 12 and under who attend a public, separate or francophone school affected by the disruption. Eligible parents and guardians would receive approximately $150 per child for each week of labour action. The payments will be made monthly, commencing October 31 and will be retroactive to October 6. Applications will be available through the Alberta.ca platform. Families can access their child’s ASN by following the steps below.
- Log into the PowerSchool Parent Portal (via a web browser, NOT the mobile App)
- Select "School Engage" from the menu on the left
- Select "Students"
- Click on the student's name
- The student's name, school and Alberta Student Number will display
Should you require further assistance, please contact your school.
Parent Toolkit
To give families flexibility during the labour disruption, Alberta Education and Childcare has created a free toolkit that parents can use to help support their child’s independent learning when schools close. The toolkit provides weekly resources that follow the K to 12 curriculum. Resources are available in English, French and French Immersion. The toolkit includes materials for two weeks of learning. Additional weeks of learning materials will be added as needed. Download the toolkits at new.learnalberta.ca.
Will teachers be sending work home so that students will not fall behind?
Teachers will not be sending work home for students, including the Centre for Learning@HOME. Will Little Flower Pre-Kindergarten and Before and After School care continue?
Little Flower programming will continue for students already enrolled. Third-party childcare operators that are already operating in CTR schools (1st Class Child Care, TOPP Kids) may continue to operate during disruption. Operators may choose to expand enrollment of children in these schools. Although CTR will be engaging with these providers regarding potential expansion, program promotion and communication remains under the purview of the operator. Families will be informed directly by childcare providers about any changes to programming and families can inquire with those providers directly.
Will extra-curricular activities, RAP, or Work Experience programs continue?
All CTR-organized extracurricular activities and programs will pause during job action. Employers may choose to continue student work placements independently, but they will not be CTR-directed or supported.
Will I still pay for full-day Kindergarten during job action?
The payment for October has been paused at this time. Upon resumption of programming, parents will not be charged for days missed.
Are school-related events such as school council and extra curricular activities continue, even if they are run by parents?
No, all school-related events and activities are cancelled and/or postponed starting October 6 and for the duration of the strike.
Will buses be running?
During a province-wide strike, buses will not be running and parents must not be transporting or allowing children to attend the school, as teachers will not be present to provide instruction.
Will supports be provided to my child during labour action?
While daily classroom instruction and all student supports (such as therapies or support from family school liaison workers) will cease, our support staff will remain working in our schools, engaging in important tasks and professional learning.
What if my child forgets an important item at school (eg. medications, glasses, etc.)?
Should you or your children require access to the schools to retrieve a forgotten item of importance, these arrangements can be made by calling the school’s front office staff.
